Character Development - Personality

Now I have gone over some ideas for the looks of my character I need too work them with her personality to give her something more than just looks.

This is what the brief saids about her:

"Pocahontas Billiams – “Willie’s sister, she’s seven years old but much more relaxed and more knowing than her sibling. She wants to be a gorilla.”

I have been focusing on the "She wants to be a gorilla." part a lot, as this small sentence really does set the tone for this character. Wanting too be something will mean that she could have quirks or taints that she has developed to make herself more gorilla like. I have taken too her changing her daily cloths too include this gorilla costume she had made. I want too make her a quiet character, not shy, but still not too adventurous at the same time.

Too reflect the quiet personality I will give her a haircut style that covers her eyes. By doing this the gorilla mask she wears acts like her eyes instead, not physically but picture wise. I also wanted too make it so she relays expressions more by her mouth expressions and not by the eyes.

She is also meant too be more knowing that her brother, I want her too be quizzical character. You only know more than others by asking a lot.

So in summary, she is a quiet, yet quizzical character. Asking questions when she wants too know something, but other than that she is quiet. Mainly talking too expand her knowledge. Her wanting too be a gorilla has lead her too make a gorilla costume our of bits of fur found at home. She choose too hide the top part of her face in her hair and mask, too look more gorilla like (cause of the mask).

Research - Masks

Have been looking at masks designs, and I havn't found anything on the net that suits my wants for my character. Most gorilla mask have scary expressions with fangs on displayed. I want a more solemn look on the mask that my Character wears. Like the examples above. As she is only 7 years old and she's would see gorillas as a big, cuddle type of creature.

I want the mask too just sit on her head and blend into her hair a little bit. The fur will be have too be the same colour as her hair, so it does blend. On the mask I am thinking maybe just have the eyes and nose on it, so the mask doesn't have a jaw. Cause I want the mask sitting on her head, a jaw on the mask could cover too much of her face.

I will have too see if I can find a similar design too what I want.

Research - Boots

Today I am looking at the type of boots I want my character too wear.
From the off I knew I wanted too place my character in big worker styled boots. Thinking from the mind of a child, they would pick up a part of large boots and pretend they could stomp around like they were a giant. So my character will have the same mindset and think by wearing these large boots she is more Gorilla like and have feet like them.

Here I found the image that come too mind when I think worker boots. I do like the tarnished effect on these boots, how they are wore away and all old. What I like the most the i the large tongues on the boot. I do want too have them on my final design, as it looks comical and gives a better impression that the boots are too big for my character. The toe caps on the boots are more square-ish, I think I may make my characters boots like this too. I will have too try rounded and shaped toe caps and see what look better.

I next found these boots, which look more new and are military type boots. I don't like the style, but the colour I like more. I want too make something a cross between this colour and the pervious tarnish style on the boots.

This last picture made me wonder if I should have wear and tear on my boots. Like how the soles of these boots are coming away from the base of the boot. Too add character too the boot, may have just one boot that was broke away. Once more these pictures are just inspiration and reference to be used for my final drawing.

Research - Fur

For her legs, I wanted too give her fur leg warmers, in the above picture. As the first part of her make shift gorilla costume. I dont want them too be as neatly cut and hemmed as the above ones. I want them too just be a piece of black fur wrapped around her legs. I am also thinking about maybe having a white strip running though them, so they aren't just all black, like in the bottom picture. If I do use the white strip idea I will add strips too other pieces of her costume.

I will also be giving her arm warmers that look like her legs warmers, once more they will be make shift and not as neat as either of my ref materials.

Research - Dungarees

The first type of Dungarees I wanted too use were long leg dungarees. As shown in the below example:

The only trouble with using this style of cut, which I found out by a few sketchs, is that the longer trouser leg would conflict and
bunch up too much with the fur leg warmers. So I chose too change the cut from long to short.

The short cut works better as it's doesn't bunch up and looks more childish on her. I am thinking maybe trying out a skirt cut, even if she is a tomboy I still want too make it show she is a little girl, plus with the skirt cut it may be easier too model.

The Skirt cut does look good and I may try it out in a few sketchs too see how it looks on my character. Colour wise I like the look of the black, it goes with the fur of the costume which will also be black. I am thinking maybe blue too, cause its the standard colour of Dunagrees, but using standard colour will make my character have no impact.

Chosen Brief

I have chosen too do Brief C: Character Design.

Out of the five different Character briefs we had too pick from, I have chosen too do 2. Pocahontas Billiams.

Below is the brief description of her:
“Willie’s sister, she’s seven years old but much more relaxed and more knowing than her sibling. She wants to be a gorilla.”

My first ideas are of a standard 7 year old girl, I want too dress her in a Gorilla costume, that she made herself at home. From old cut offs of material she found. The costume I want too be cruelly made, which pieces cut too the wrong size and safety pins used too hold it together. To go with the costume she will have over sized work boots, as she is trying to impersonate the gorillas stomping feet.

For other clothing I am thinking Dungarees, as this is the first thing that comes in mind when thinking about 7 year old fashion, I am thinking of her as a bit of a tomboy too. As Dungarees tend to be a bit more of a boyish fashion item this is a good way too show this.

I want most of her face hidden by a bowl cut in her hair, with only her nose and mouth on show. Lastly on top of her head she will have a gorilla mask.
